From an open roadstead, Ōamaru Harbour welcomed migrants, stock and building materials from the 1840s. Then, as the breakwater and wharves were built, wool, grain and frozen meat were exported to the world until 1970.From tents on the beach to Ōamaru stone buildings for merchants, bankers and millers, the town and district grew rapidly.
